Wasdale, beneath England's highest mountains, is one of the most dramatic camping settings in the Lake District and the classic base for Scafell Pike.

What to expect

A remote, mountain-ringed valley with England's deepest lake (Wast Water) and highest peak (Scafell Pike) at its head, a famous valley campsite and a historic inn. It is the obvious base for serious fellwalking — remote and weather-exposed, with limited facilities.

Getting there car-free

Wasdale is one of the harder Lake District valleys to reach by public transport; the nearest stations are on the Cumbrian Coast line (Seascale and Ravenglass), with very limited onward transport into the valley.

What is Wasdale best for?

A base for Scafell Pike and the high western fells, in one of the Lakes' most dramatic settings.

When is the best time to camp here?

Late spring to early autumn for the most settled mountain weather.
