Thetford Forest in the Norfolk-Suffolk border country is the UK’s largest lowland pine forest and the only serious MTB venue in East Anglia. The terrain is sandy, flat-ish and fast — quite different from the rocky Welsh and Lake District trail centres — which makes it the natural choice for riders within reach of Cambridge, Norwich or Ipswich.

What to expect

Three waymarked trails. The Beater is a 6km green family loop. Black Rabbit Trail is 8km blue. The 25km red Bike Forest is the headline ride — rolling singletrack winding through pine stands, occasional fast descents, and a few technical sections through old quarry workings. Drainage is excellent thanks to the sandy soil, so trails ride fast even after rain.

Practical notes

Open year-round. Bike Art at the High Lodge visitor centre runs hire, repairs and a cafe. Forestry England manages the site — park at High Lodge (small fee). Combine with a stay in Bury St Edmunds or the Norfolk Broads. Plenty of B&B and pub accommodation in the immediate area. Easier than Welsh trail centres but a real day’s riding for fit intermediate riders.

Getting there car-free

High Lodge, the hub for Thetford Forest's trails, is reached via Brandon station, a mile or two away on the line between Norwich and Ely. From there it is a short taxi, or a ride in on the forest's paths.

Can you get to Thetford Forest without a car?

Yes, with a short hop. Train to Brandon, then a taxi or a cycle in to High Lodge. The flat, sandy Breckland trails make riding in from the station an easy option.
