About this region

Not yet in the directory — but with the Mourne Mountains, the Causeway Coast, the Sperrins and the Ards Peninsula, it should be. This page is a deliberate placeholder; we're working on it.

Northern Ireland is the genuine gap in the Outside Adventures directory. The Mourne Mountains in County Down hold some of the best granite trad climbing in the UK and Ireland — Slieve Donard, Slieve Bearnagh, the Mourne Wall, the routes on Lower Cove and Spellack. The Causeway Coast in north Antrim has the basalt sea cliffs at Fair Head, the Giant's Causeway, and a coast path that rivals the South West Coast Path for drama.

The Sperrins in County Tyrone are some of the quietest hills anywhere in Ireland or Britain. The Ards Peninsula and Strangford Lough offer some of the best sea kayaking on the islands. Surfing on the north coast at Portrush, Castlerock and Magheraroarty is consistent Atlantic groundswell from October to March. Belfast and Derry both have city-based climbing walls and outdoor clubs that hold the local scene together.

The directory will grow into Northern Ireland as we find contributors who know the regions firsthand. If you do, the contact page is the way in — route notes, photos, school recommendations all welcome. Until then, this page is honest rather than empty.
