Sennen Cove is the most westerly surf beach in mainland England — a north-facing bay near Land's End that catches plenty of swell but, because of the angle, often holds shape when the rest of Cornwall is blown out. It's a smaller, quieter, less commercial alternative to Fistral, about an hour west along the coast.
What to expect
A wide beach break that works on most swell directions. Best at mid tide on a clean swell; the wave is fast and punchy at size, gentler at small. The cove is sheltered enough by the headland that strong westerly winds — which would close out Newquay — sometimes leave Sennen surfable. Localism is lower-key than at the busier Cornish breaks, but the line-up still has its regulars.
Practical notes
Year-round; September-March is the prime size window. Smart Surf School and Sennen Surfing Centre both run lessons from the beach. The Old Success Inn at the top of the slipway is a proper post-surf pub. Parking is in the village; arrive early in summer. Wetsuit: 4/3 from October, 3/2 in summer. Sennen pairs well with a sunset walk out to Land's End or Cape Cornwall.
