Buttermere is one of the quieter and most beautiful lakes in the Lake District, ringed by high fells in a remote western valley. Clear, cold and deep, it is a classic Lakeland mountain swim with a lake-circuit path for walkers.

What to expect

A clear glacial lake with gentle shingle entries and spectacular fell scenery on every side. It is quieter than the bigger, busier lakes, and the water stays cold even in high summer, so a wetsuit is sensible for anything beyond a quick dip. The flat circular path around the lake makes it easy to find a quiet entry point.

Getting there car-free

Buttermere is remote but reachable by public transport with planning. The nearest mainline station is Penrith, with a bus to Keswick and then the seasonal Buttermere bus over the passes into the valley. Check timetables, as the valley services are limited.

Is Buttermere good for beginners?

The gentle shingle entries help, but it is cold, deep open water in a remote setting, so go prepared and stay within your depth and ability.

When is the best time to swim here?

May to September for the least-cold water and the most reliable transport into the valley.
