The Menai Strait between Anglesey and the north Wales mainland is one of Britain's classic sea-kayaking waters — fast tidal races, sheltered shores and the mountains of Eryri rising behind.
What to expect
A tidal strait with strong currents and notable races (the Swellies) that demand respect and careful timing around the tide — superb for skilled paddlers, with calmer sheltered stretches for guided trips and beginners. The backdrop of Snowdonia and the two Menai bridges is hard to beat. Always plan around the tide, and go with local knowledge if you are new to the strait.
Getting there car-free
The nearest mainline station is Bangor, right beside the strait, with launch points around Menai Bridge and the Anglesey shore a short distance away.
Is the Menai Strait good for beginners?
Sheltered sections and guided trips suit beginners, but the tidal races are for experienced sea kayakers only, and always on the right tide.
When is the best time to paddle here?
Spring to autumn for the conditions, but timing is dictated by the tides rather than the calendar.
