Loch Lomond, the largest lake in Britain by surface area, is a superb and accessible paddling destination just north of Glasgow, with wooded islands and Highland scenery.

What to expect

A vast loch with sheltered bays, paddle-able islands and open expanses; the southern end is gentler and dotted with islands, the northern end narrower and more dramatic under the hills. Wind can build quickly across the open water. It sits within the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, where camping byelaws apply if you stay over.

Getting there car-free

This is one of the most accessible big paddles in Scotland: Balloch station, at the southern tip of the loch, has direct trains from Glasgow, with launch points a short walk away.

Is it good for beginners?

The sheltered southern bays are good for beginners; the open water needs care once any wind gets up.

When is the best time to paddle here?

Spring to autumn for the warmest, calmest conditions and longest days.
