The Royal Docks is a managed open-water swimming venue in the heart of London, where Love Open Water runs lifeguarded sessions in the historic Royal Victoria Dock — an urban open-water swim just a few minutes from the DLR. It is a managed venue rather than a wild swim, which is exactly what makes it a safe way into open water in the city.
What to expect
Lifeguarded swimming in the clean, EU-bathing-standard water of the dock, with marked loops from 150m up to 750m, a cold-water shower and limited changing (come swim-ready). It runs on the NOWCA membership and safety-wristband system with pre-booked session slots; wetsuit hire is available, and there is a summer season (roughly May to September), with winter swimming subject to a cold-water induction. It suits confident pool swimmers stepping up to open water (the benchmark is 400m unaided) through to triathletes training.
Getting there car-free
This is about as car-free as open-water swimming gets: Royal Victoria station on the DLR is a few minutes' walk, and the Emirates cable-car terminal is barely 100m away. Parking is very limited, so come by train.
Do you need to book or be a member?
Yes — you need a NOWCA membership (which includes the safety wristband) and a pre-booked session slot to swim.
Is it a wild swim?
No — it is a managed, lifeguarded venue. That supervision and the safety system are what make it a reassuring place to start open-water swimming in the city.
