The River Dart on Dartmoor is one of England's best-known white-water kayaking rivers, with the classic Loop section a rite of passage for paddlers.

What to expect

White water that depends entirely on rainfall — the Dart Loop is a classic grade 2–3 run when levels are up, set in beautiful moorland and woodland. It is for paddlers with white-water skills and the right kit; flatter sections such as Spitchwick are far gentler. Levels change fast, so check them before you go.

Getting there car-free

The nearest railway station is Newton Abbot, with the Dartmoor put-ins reached by car or taxi from there.

Is the Dart good for beginners?

The white-water sections are not — they need genuine white-water experience — though calmer stretches of the river suit novices.

When is the best time to paddle here?

Autumn to spring, when rainfall keeps the river levels up.
