The Ogwen Valley in Eryri (Snowdonia), with Tryfan and the Glyderau rising above it, is one of the best mountaineering and scrambling grounds in Wales.

What to expect

Tryfan is famously a mountain you cannot reach the top of without using your hands — a classic Grade 1 scramble to a rocky summit, complete with the leap between the Adam and Eve monoliths — while the Glyderau and the Devil's Kitchen offer more scrambling and climbing. It is rocky, serious terrain and a superb introduction to mountaineering for the well prepared.

Getting there car-free

The nearest mainline station is Bangor, with buses along the A5 through the Ogwen Valley to the trailheads.

Is Tryfan a walk?

No — there is no non-scrambling route to the summit; it is a hands-on Grade 1 scramble throughout.

When is the best time to climb here?

Late spring to early autumn; in winter it becomes full mountaineering terrain.
