Scapa Flow in Orkney is the UK's most famous dive destination — a vast natural harbour holding the wrecks of the German High Seas Fleet, scuttled in 1919.
What to expect
World-class wreck diving on the remains of the German fleet, plus blockships and marine life, in cold, often dark northern water. Depths and conditions make most of it intermediate-to-advanced, usually dived from hard boats with local operators. It is a genuine bucket-list UK dive.
Getting there car-free
Orkney is reached by ferry from the north Scottish coast (Scrabster or Gills Bay) or by flights to Kirkwall; the diving is boat-based, with Stromness the main hub.
Is it good for beginners?
Mostly no — the wrecks are deep and cold, suiting intermediate and advanced divers, though some shallower blockships are more forgiving.
When is the best time to dive here?
Spring to autumn for the most settled conditions and best visibility.
