Porth Neigwl — usually called Hells Mouth — is a four-mile west-facing bay on the Llyn Peninsula in north-west Wales. It's one of the most consistent surf breaks in Wales and the obvious destination when north-Cornwall is flat. The bay's exposure to Atlantic swells means it works almost every time there's surf anywhere on the British west coast.

What to expect

A long beach break that picks up swell from southwest through west. The peaks shift around the bay depending on sand-bar shape; locals call them by section — the Boards (south end), the Middle, and the North End. Wave size and quality is broadly similar to Cornwall's better days, but with significantly fewer surfers in the water. Reasonably forgiving at small sizes; the bay closes out above 6ft.

Practical notes

September through April is the prime swell season. The Offaxis surf shop in Pwllheli is the local hub for hire, repairs and information. The nearest village is Abersoch, with cafes, B&Bs and a couple of pubs. Parking is at the National Trust Porth Neigwl car park (small fee, fills in summer). Wetsuit: 5/4/3 in winter; 4/3 in autumn; 3/2 summer. Cold-water gloves and boots through January-March.
