Llangennith Beach on the Gower Peninsula is the longest and most exposed surf beach in south Wales — a three-mile west-facing stretch of sand that catches more swell more often than anywhere else on the southern coast. It's been the heart of the Gower surf scene since the 1960s.

What to expect

A wide-open beach break with multiple peaks. The wave is generally gentler than the more localised reef breaks elsewhere on Gower (Caswell, Langland), which makes Llangennith the natural choice for beginners and intermediates and a forgiving longboard wave. Conditions get cleanest on a small-to-medium swell with light easterly winds. Big swells (over 8ft) close the bay out across most of its length.

Practical notes

Year-round; autumn and winter for size, summer for the easier conditions. PJ's Surf School and the Welsh Surfing Federation Surf School both operate from the beach. The King's Head in Llangennith village is the post-surf pub. Hillend Camping is on the dunes — book early in summer. Parking at the Welsh Surfing Federation car park behind the beach is reliable. Wetsuit: 5/4/3 in winter, 4/3 autumn, 3/2 summer.
