Spitchwick — also known as Deeper Marsh — is one of Dartmoor's best-loved wild swimming spots: a series of deep, slow pools on the River Dart near Ashburton in Devon. A grassy bank, easy access from the road and reliably deep water make it the classic Dartmoor river swim.

What to expect

The Dart here forms wide, calm pools between rocky shallows — deep enough to swim properly, with flat grassy banks for picnics and a gentle entry that suits families and confident swimmers alike. The water is clear and cold, fed off the high moor, so it stays bracing even in summer. It gets busy on hot weekends, so come early or out of season for the quiet version. As with any river, levels and flow rise quickly after rain, so check conditions before getting in.

Getting there car-free

Spitchwick is deep in Dartmoor and easiest by car, but it can be reached on public transport with planning. The nearest railway station is Newton Abbot on the main line, with buses toward Ashburton and the moor; the final stretch to Newbridge and Spitchwick needs a taxi. Parking is at the New Bridge car park (TQ13 7NT).

Is Spitchwick good for beginners?

Yes — the calm pools and easy grassy entry make it one of the gentler Dartmoor swims, though the water is cold and, like any river, can change quickly after rain.

When is the best time to swim here?

Late spring to early autumn for the warmest (still bracing) water and long evenings. Early mornings and weekdays avoid the summer crowds.
