Scafell Pike, at 978m the highest mountain in England, is a serious Lakeland objective and the high point of the National Three Peaks.

What to expect

Rough, rocky walking to a boulder-strewn summit, with the neighbouring Scafell and its crags — Scafell Crag, Broad Stand — offering proper scrambling and climbing. The summit plateau is featureless in cloud, so navigation matters. It is a bigger, more serious day than its modest height suggests.

Getting there car-free

The high fells are remote; for the Wasdale approach the nearest stations are on the Cumbrian Coast line (Ravenglass and Seascale), with limited onward transport into the valley.

Is Scafell Pike just a walk?

The main routes are tough mountain walks; the crags of neighbouring Scafell are firmly the preserve of scramblers and climbers.

When is the best time to climb it?

Late spring to early autumn for the most settled conditions.
