Wales is one of the most respected paragliding regions in the UK — mid-altitude mountain terrain, generous prevailing winds off the Atlantic, and a network of long-running schools clustered around the Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia. The combination of coastal cliff sites in Pembrokeshire and mountain ridge sites further inland means there’s usually somewhere flyable on a given day.

What to expect

The Brecon Beacons hold the largest concentration of training sites: the Black Mountains, the Llangynidr ridge, Hay Bluff and Pen-y-Crug all support BHPA-approved instruction. Pembrokeshire’s coastal cliffs (Newgale, Druidstone, Strumble Head) give predictable ridge-soaring on a clean onshore breeze. Snowdonia offers more committing thermal flying for experienced pilots in summer. The full British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association pathway is available across Welsh schools.

Practical notes

April through October is the practical season. Crickhowell, Talgarth, Llangollen and St Davids are the natural school bases. Welsh weather is the constant variable — flexible plans and multi-day courses give the best chance of useful flight time. Most schools include kit hire in lesson prices. Bring waterproofs, layers, and trainers for the take-off walks.
