Croyde Bay on the north Devon coast is the most consistent UK beach break for intermediate and advanced surfers — a heavier, more powerful wave than most of Cornwall's beaches, with a reputation for being unforgiving and busy in equal measure. When the swell is right, it can produce some of the cleanest waves in England.

What to expect

Croyde works best in a small-to-medium west or northwest swell, on a low-to-mid pushing tide. The wave is steep, often barrels at size, and breaks closer to shore than nearby Saunton or Woolacombe — which makes the takeoffs more committing and the rides shorter and faster. Big swells (over 6ft) close out the bay. The line-up is one of the more localised in England; pace yourself in the pecking order.

Practical notes

Best between September and April for size and shape; summer surf is gentler and more beginner-friendly. The village has a good surf-shop scene (Surfed Out, Ralph's) and several long-established surf schools (Surf South West and Walking on Waves). Camping at Mitchum's overlooks the bay. Wetsuit: 4/3 from October, 3/2 in summer. Parking fills early on a good swell; arrive before 8am or after 5pm in summer.
